Baguio Gong Festival to sound off a hundred gongs

[UPDATE AS OF 10.11.2013: GONG FEST MOVED TO THE 26TH -- see new post HERE]

Over a hundred gongs will be beaten to call for “peace and unity” from the Baguio City Hall to the Baguio Cathedral during the launching of  Baguio's first gong festival on October 12.

Congressman Nicasio Aliping and Mayor Mauricio Domogan are expected to participate in full native attire in the early afternoon walk as part of the city’s Indigenous Month celebration.

According to BGF organizer Jocelyn Banasan-Kapuno, partipants will come from several other school and community-based indigenous organizations, including the award-winning performing group Happiyo’ Mi of the University of the Cordilleras (UC).

The program  will be followed at the Cathedral grounds by cultural dances,  a film showing, an indigenous mass, and an indigenous ritual to be presided over by a mambunong (native priest), and a bonfire cum cañao in the evening.

The gong festival walk is an offshoot of  the “Wanes (g-string)/Oneness Walk” during last year’s Indigenous Month celebration in which then Councilor Aliping was also in his native attire.

The festival hopes to feature all the major ethnolinguistic groups in the Cordillera and create a non-commercialized venue for the re-rooting of young Igorots in their cultural values and music traditions.  Cultural workshops for cultural advocates and indigenous games will be held on the 26th and 27th of October 2013.
